We have talked with students about different types of words. Tier 1 words are usually Sight Words that students should know quickly. Tier 2 words may be used in may different contexts and situations, words like "explain" "sequence" "hypothesis" or "demonstrate." Teachers may to refer to Tier 3 words as "College Words" or "Expensive Words." They are words that may come from a specific content area or unit of study, such as a math unit, or special words from a book that the class is currently reading.
