Math Problem Solving

We are using a new program called Exemplars to help students work on using problem solving techniques when approaching math problems. Students should practice writing a "Red Light" sentence, explaining what the problem is asking them to solve. Then, they write a "Yellow Light" sentence telling what strategy they plan to use to solve the problem.

Here are student rubrics and teacher rubrics for problems.  Also, check out a sample Grade 3 Exemplars problem and a set of potential solutions.

Granite City School District in Utah has also put together a wonderful list of math words that are helpful for students to know and understand. They have different words for each grade level, along with an illustration and explanation for each word. Check them out here!
